Digital Internet

Before the internet, information moved in big batches — newspapers, broadcast TV, scheduled mailings. Centrally planned. One size fits all.

The internet broke information into small packets, routed them through distributed networks, and delivered exactly what each person needed, when they needed it.

Result: everyone became a publisher. Information costs dropped 1000x. Innovation exploded.

Physical Internet

Today, traffic jams, oil supply shocks, and streets unsafe to walk and bike result from batch processes on analog roads. Electrical outages as the century-old analog grid breaks during storms.

JPods' patent for solar-powered transport networks digitizes and personalizes both energy and mobility — small pods (up to 500 kg) routed through distributed networks above traffic, on demand.

Regulations Are the Issue

For a century we knew the Internet was practical, but federal monopolies blocked innovation between 1918 and 1991 — free markets were not restored until The High-Performance Computing Act of 1991.

"When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain… We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do this will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket."

1942: Hedy Lamarr patented the technology behind WiFi and Bluetooth. The Navy rejected it until 1957–62. Bluetooth did not commercialize until 1997.

1968: The Mother of All Demos documents most aspects of the Internet and modern computing. Start at minute 30 for 4 minutes to watch the "mouse," video conferencing, clicking on URLs — everything we use daily, demonstrated 57 years ago.

The same pattern is repeating with transportation. The technology exists. Congress identified it in 1975. Morgantown has run injury-free since 1975. The barrier is regulatory, not technical. We're breaking it — city by city, maker by maker.

Why 10x?

There is a 10X rule that to drive a paradigm shift requires a 10 times improvement.

In 1916 every US city over 10,000 people had one or more privately funded streetcar networks providing Mobility As A Service (MaaS). There were 260,000 miles of railroads. Top-down government planning since 1916 replaced the liberty to innovate and Wisdom of the Many sorting innovations:

Railroads are 188 times more efficient than roads, but top-down government planning — with no retrospection on the consequences — replaced 45% of railroads.

Similarly, in 1935, 50% of US electricity was from renewables. The wind industry was making 80,000 windmills a year. The Rural Electrification Act of 1936 destroyed the renewable industry and blocked for a century achieving what Thomas Edison noted as practical in 1910:

Sunshine is spread out thin and so is electricity. Perhaps they are the same. This scheme of combustion to get power makes me sick to think of it. It is so wasteful. It is just the old, foolish Prometheus idea, and the father of Prometheus was a baboon.

When we learn how to store electricity, we will cease being apes ourselves; until then we are tailless orangutans. You see, we should utilize natural forces and thus get all of our power. Sunshine is a form of energy, and the winds and the tides are manifestations of energy… Do we use them? Oh, no! We burn up wood and coal, as renters burn up the front fence for fuel. We live like squatters, not as if we owned the property.

The 10X reduction in costs and energy were identified by Congressional Study PB-244854, "Automated Guideway Transit", as the solution to the 1973 Oil Embargo. It also noted the need for the 5X5 Free Market regulatory change:

"Institutional failures" had blocked such innovations for "four to six decades."

Energy and Mobility Self-Reliance
